Extension and validation of a geographic information system–based method for calculating the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation length-slope factor for erosion risk assessments in large watersheds

چکیده
A geographic information system-based (GIS) method for estimating the lengthslope (LS) factor of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation using national-scale datasets was developed and validated. The method was applied to approximately two-thirds of the Mississippi River basin, focusing on agricultural subwatersheds in the Midwest. The results were validated by comparing the GIS-based statistical distributions of LS-factor values with the distribution of LS-factors calculated from the Natural Resources Inventory database at the eight-digit watershed level. The GIS-based approach was shown to produce statistical distributions of LS-factor values very similar to those described by the Natural Resources Inventory database of field measurements, providing for the first time strong support for using GIS-based methods to represent the spatial heterogeneity and magnitude of LS-factors. Development and validation of the GIS-based approach is an important step toward conducting large-scale erosion potential assessments that have soil conservation implications in natural resources management, agronomy, and agrochemical exposure risk assessments.

متن کاملSoil Erosion Modeling For Managing Natural Hazards with Determining Four adequate Cell Size Factor of Slope Length
Soil loss erosion is one of the most serious environmental problems (widespread globally), which is a menace to sustainable ecosystems and agriculture. As the previous studies show, the world’s highest soil loss rates due to erosion are in three continents, i.e. Asia, Africa, and South America. A new method was proposed to statistically evaluate the most appropriate cell size for LS factor inpu...

The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and revised USLE (RUSLE) are often used to estimate soil erosion at regional landscape scales, however a major limitation is the difficulty in extracting the LS factor. The geographic information system-based (GIS-based) methods which have been developed for estimating the LS factor for USLE and RUSLE also have limitations. The unit contributing area-base...

Soil erosion is a serious environmental problem in Kothagiri Taluk. Many studies have been carried out to map shifting cultivation and areas susceptible to soil erosion. Mostly, estimated soil loss is taken as the basis to classify the level of soil loss susceptibility of area. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) function is a commonly used erosion model for this purpose in Kothagi...
